چکیده

Substrate utilization by the isolated aerobic (Po2 500 mm Hg) and hypoxic (Po2 50 mm Hg) turtle (Pseudemys scripta) heart was evaluated by retrograde perfusion. During aerobic perfusion, the heart demonstrated active extraction and oxidation of free fatty acid (FFA) even in the presence of exogenous glucose. FFA metabolism was similar to that seen in the mammalian heart and was adequate to meet most of the myocardial energy requirements. When hypoxia supervened, FFA utilization did not compete with, but rather enhanced, concomitant carbohydrate metabolism, and glycogenolysis provided sufficient substrate to meet myocardial energy requirements with little change in observed hemodynamic function. During hypoxia, both rat and turtle demonstrated enhanced myocardial esterification of extracted ,[1-C]palmitate into neutral lipid. Exogenous glucose provided the glycerophosphate skeleton for FFA esterification in the hypoxic rat heart; endogenous glycogen served this function in the turtle myocardium. Extraction of glucose by the turtle heart was limited and changed insignificantly during hypoxia. The rat heart increased glucose uptake five-fold during hypoxia. Glycogen stores in turtle heart were tenfold greater than they were in rat heart, and they provided greater metabolic flexibility and permitted the heart to function adequately under environmental conditions that are lethal to the mammal.

Radiosensitizing effects of gemcitabine on aerobic and chronically hypoxic HeLa and MRC5 cells in-vitro

Background: Gemcitabine (2′, 2′-difluoro-2′- deoxycytidine, an analogue of deoxycytidine) is a relatively new drug with wide range of anti-cancer activity. In this study, radiosensitizing effects of gemcitabine was investigated on HeLa and MRC5 human originated cell lines under both chronically hypoxic and normoxic conditions using the micronucleus (MN) assay. Materials and Methods: F...

The Effect of Exercise on Paraoxonase-1 Activity and Lipid Profile in Obesity and Insulin Resistance Conditions

In the absence of insulin, regular physical activity facilitates the glucose entry into the cell via affecting several signaling pathways. Moreover, regular exercise improves the lipid profile and increases the paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity. PON-1 interacts with High-density lipoprotein (HDL) and, in the presence of calcium, hydrolyzes free radicals, prevents low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxid...

The effect of eight weeks of interval aerobic training with the consumption of crocetin extract on some indices of angiogenesis of the heart tissue of prediabetic and diabetic aged rats

Background and aims: Diabetes is associated with cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Although the favorable role of physical activity and antioxidants in people's health has been reported, the simultaneous effect of HIIT and crocetin on angiogenesis in heart tissue is not well known. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of intermittent aerobic training with the...

Effect of moderate intensity aerobic training on cardiac autonomic system function and nitric oxide levels in middle-aged males with metabolic syndrome

Background and Aims: The sedentary lifestyle in individuals with metabolic syndrome is a main threatening risk for their health. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise with 65% of maximal oxygen consumption on heart rate variability and vascular nitric oxide levels in middle-aged males with metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods: In total, 30 middle-aged men with me...

COMPARISON OF THE EFFECT OF 6 WEEKS AEROBIC TRAINING ON THE ACTIVITY OF CATALASE ENZYME AND MALONDIALDEHYDE IN HEART TISSUE OF HEALTHY AND STREPTOZOTOCIN-DIABETIC MALE WISTAR RATS (INTERVENTION: EXPERIMENTAL)

Background & Aims: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the most important complications of diabetes mellitus and hyperglycemia induced oxidative stress can increase hyperglycemia and the risk of diabetes complications. So the aim of the current study was to examine comparison of the effect of 6 weeks aerobic training on the activity of catalase enzyme and malondialdehyde in heart tissue of healt...
